AI: Could it be Manufacturing’s Secret Productivity Weapon?

AI: Could it be Manufacturing’s Secret Productivity Weapon?

David Lomas, Executive Editor at Manufacturing Matters, reflects on a recent AI study and what it really means for UK manufacturers.

“AI is no longer the future. It’s happening now, and manufacturing is quietly leading the charge.” That’s the view of David Lomas, Executive Editor of Manufacturing Matters, after reviewing new research by The Access Group showing how manufacturing workers are among the top adopters of AI.

The study, which surveyed employees across 12 industries, revealed that 57% of manufacturing professionals who regularly handle data, are already using AI – with 93% reporting a positive impact. Only the tech sector ranked higher for adoption.

So what’s really driving this AI uptake on the factory floor?

“Manufacturers are pragmatic,” says Lomas. “They’ve been battling skills shortages and rising costs for years. If AI helps reduce workload, boost productivity, and make better decisions, it seems logical that they’ll use it.”

According to the research, the top benefits include workload reduction, higher productivity, and improved focus. But Lomas sees a slightly deeper value.

“AI is freeing up human potential. It’s taking the drudge work out of jobs and giving people the headspace to be more innovative. That’s where real competitive advantage lies in any business.”

Interestingly, generative AI tools like ChatGPT were named the most-used applications, helping 65% of users – and lowering stress for 57%. But alongside optimism, the report highlighted caution, especially around data security and job displacement.

“Trust is critical,” says Lomas. “Manufacturers need to ensure employees are not just using AI, but using it wisely. That means they need to implement clear policies & instructions, approved tools, and training.”

He points to platforms like Access Evo, designed to provide secure, company-approved AI access.

“It’s not just about capability, it’s about confidence.”

For small and mid-sized manufacturers, AI could be a game-changer – but only if it’s implemented with care.

“The key point about AI is that it doesn’t necessarily replace people,” says Lomas. “It can enhance them. The winners in this space will be those who treat AI as a tool to enhance their team, not to undermine them.”

So is AI the secret weapon for manufacturing’s next leap forward? The data says yes. But, as always, it’s the way we use it that will matter most.
